چکیده

A study of stable isotopes (N18O, N13C) of a uranium-series dated aragonitic stalactite from Nerja Cave (Ma¤laga, southern Spain) was carried out in order to determine the conditions of deposition in isotopic equilibrium and nonequilibrium. We obtained a record of climate change from 190 000 to 160 000 years ago. A series of carbon (N13C) and oxygen (N18O) isotopes analyses have been carried out in parallel to the stalactite growth axis. Sampling was done in each growth layer. A curve of the secular N18O aragonite variations for the stalactite suggests cooler climate conditions in southern Spain for the period studied compared to the present. 6 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. How Far into Europe Did Pikas (Lagomorpha: Ochotonidae) Go during the Pleistocene? New Evidence from Central Iberia

This paper reports the first find of pika remains in the Iberian Peninsula, at a site in central Spain. A fragmented mandible of Ochotona cf. pusilla was unearthed from Layer 3 (deposited some 63.4±5.5 ka ago as determined by thermoluminescence) of the Buena Pinta Cave. This record establishes new limits for the genus geographic distribution during the Pleistocene, shifting the previous edge of...

Climate-driven range expansion and morphological evolution in a marine gastropod.

Little is known about the phenotypic consequences of global climate change, despite the excellent Pleistocene fossil record of many taxa. We used morphological measurements from extant and Pleistocene populations of a marine gastropod (Acanthinucella spirata) in conjunction with mitochondrial DNA sequence variation from living populations to determine how populations responded phenotypically to...

Centennial-scale compound-specific hydrogen isotope record of Pleistocene–Holocene climate transition from southern New England

[1] Northeastern North America experienced major climate shifts during the Pleistocene–Holocene transition. However, there have been no high-resolution isotopic records of climate change from this region. Here, we present a centennial-scale record of climate change during the transition based on D/H ratios of behenic acid (C22 nacid) or dDBA from a sediment core in Blood Pond, Massachusetts. Su...

Holocene and Late Pleistocene climate in the sub-Mediterranean continental environment: A speleothem record from Poleva Cave (Southern Carpathians, Romania)

The PP10 stalagmite from Poleva Cave provides a Late Pleistocene and Holocene isotopic record characteristic for the SW of Romania, a sub-Mediterranean climatic region. The speleothem was dated by eight TIMS and one alpha U-series dates which showed that it was precipitated between ∼75 ka and ∼2 ka with at least two hiatuses. The basal sector of the stalagmite showed a slow-growing regime of ∼0...

A high spatial resolution dO profile of a speleothem using an ion-microprobe

The oxygen isotopic composition of a stalactite from the Soreq Cave, Israel has been investigated by in situ high spatial resolution ion microprobe analysis. The dO record obtained on portions of the stalactite, which were deposited during the time interval of 18–14.3, 10.8–8.5 and 1.5–0.2 ka, has a temporal resolution ranging from f 1 to 25 years (depending on the deposition rate during the pe...
